Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure to reconstruct lost breast tissue after breast removal due to breast cancer. The aim is to reshape the breast as closely as possible to its natural structure. This procedure both improves the physical appearance and supports the person’s spiritual well-being.
Breast reconstruction can be performed in the same session as the mastectomy surgery in which the breast is removed, or it can be performed at a later stage after the treatment process is completed. The technique to be applied; It is determined by many factors such as the patient’s general health condition, treatments received, body structure and the size of the other breast.
The most commonly applied methods include the use of silicone prosthesis, tissue transfer from the patient’s own tissue (from the abdomen, back or hip area) and the combination of these two techniques. In some cases, the nipple and areola (the dark ring around the nipple) can also be reconstructed through surgery or tattooing.
This surgery, performed under general anesthesia, may take 3 to 8 hours depending on the technique used. Patients usually stay in the hospital for 1–5 days. During the recovery process, it is recommended to use a sports bra, comply with physical restrictions for a certain period of time, and have regular medical check-ups.
Breast reconstruction not only provides an improvement in appearance; At the same time, it increases the person’s self-confidence, restores the feeling of body integrity and helps prevent physical problems such as posture disorders that may occur due to breast loss.
